Employee Travel Day Tracking for Tax Compliance
Each employee's iReside app keeps a daily record of which states and countries they were in, and the employee can share it as an audit-ready PDF report. Where an employee works decides where their wages are taxed, and iReside counts the days they are in each place automatically by GPS. The company view is in early access.
iReside for Businesses helps HR, mobility and tax teams keep business travelers, remote employees and cross-border workers compliant. Today each employee can use the iReside iPhone app, which counts every day by GPS in each US state, Canadian province and country (307 jurisdictions), warns before day thresholds and visa limits such as Schengen 90/180, and produces audit-ready PDF reports. A company dashboard across employees, policy alerts to HR or tax, and exports for payroll are in early access.
Where employee travel creates tax exposure
Each of these turns on a count of days in a place. Without a daily record, the answer is rebuilt from expense reports after the fact.
State withholding when employees work in other states
Wages are generally sourced to the state where the work is physically done, not where the employer is, which can create withholding and filing obligations in states where you have never registered.
Remote work taxes by stateNonresident thresholds and safe harbors
Several states have a 30-day safe harbor. Illinois uses 30 working days, and Alabama adopted 30 days for 2026 for employees whose home state has a similar rule or no income tax. New York and California can tax a nonresident from the first day of work. Where the safe harbor is all-or-nothing, as in Alabama, crossing the threshold makes every day worked there taxable, including the first 30, and the employer must begin withholding.
Days you can work in another state tax-freeThe convenience of the employer rule
New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Nebraska, plus Connecticut and New Jersey on a reciprocal basis, can tax a remote employee of an in-state employer for days worked from home in another state.
The convenience of the employer rulePermanent establishment risk from days abroad
An employee habitually working from a country where the company has no presence can create a taxable presence for the employer there.
Global mobility compliance for family offices183-day tests for employees abroad
Many countries use a 183-day presence test for tax residency, so an assignment that runs long can change where an employee is taxed.

iReside for Businesses: common questions
What is global mobility tax compliance?
It is keeping employees who travel or work remotely within the tax and immigration rules of every place they work: state withholding, nonresident filing thresholds, permanent establishment risk for the company and visa stay limits. Almost every one of those rules is a count of days in a place.
How can a company track employee travel for tax purposes?
Today each employee can install the iReside iPhone app, which counts every day by GPS in each state and country and produces audit-ready PDF reports. A company dashboard across employees is in early access, and we are building it with our first customers.
What does each employee install?
The iReside iPhone app. It counts days in the background with no manual logging, warns before day thresholds and visa limits such as Schengen 90/180, and exports an audit-ready PDF day report.
Is the company dashboard available now?
Not yet. Team features, including the company dashboard, policy alerts to HR or tax and payroll exports, are in early access. Request early access and we will be in touch.
Is state withholding based on where the employee lives or works?
Wages are generally sourced to the state where the work is physically done, so an employee who works in another state can create withholding and filing obligations there. The convenience of the employer rule in New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Nebraska, plus Connecticut and New Jersey on a reciprocal basis, is the main exception.
What is a 30-day safe harbor?
Some states do not require nonresident withholding until an employee has worked there for more than a set number of days. Illinois uses 30 working days. Alabama adopted 30 days for 2026, but only for employees whose home state has a similar rule or no income tax. New York and California can tax a nonresident from the first day of work.
Does a day present in a state count as a workday?
Not always. Withholding rules count days worked, while residency tests count days present. iReside records every day present in each state and country, and your payroll or tax team decides which of those were workdays.
Does iReside handle remote employee state tax withholding?
iReside counts the days. Each employee's app records where that employee was, and the employee can share the audit-ready PDF report so your payroll and tax teams can apply each state's withholding rules and safe harbors. It does not run payroll and it is not tax advice.
Can iReside help with permanent establishment risk?
Each employee's app gives the input that review depends on: a daily, GPS-based record of which country that employee was in, which the employee can share. Whether those days create a permanent establishment is a question for your tax advisers.
Does iReside work for family office residency tracking?
Yes. Family members and staff can each track their days with the app today, with alerts before limits and audit-ready reports. A combined view for the office is part of early access.
